Pharmacogenomics; its Beneficial and Harmful Effects Essay

Essays on Pharmacogenomics; its Beneficial and Harmful Effects Essay The paper "Pharmacogenomics; its Beneficial and Harmful Effects" is a great example of an essay on medical science. This paper contains the basic definition of Pharmacogenomics and the beneficial and harmful effects imposed by this biotechnology will also be discussed.   Pharmacogenomics; its Beneficial and Harmful Effects The term Pharmacogenomics is a combination of pharmacology and genomics and it is the study that explains how different people respond to medicines and other drugs depending on their genetic composition. It is actually the gene factor in each individual which entails the difference in responses. Apart from the genetic framework, there are a number of reasons that contribute to the variation in attitudes, they can be diet, environment, lifestyle, age factor etc but the key to manufacturing tailor-made medicines totally depends on how well the doctors understand the genetic makeup of individuals. (Martin, 11) Beneficial EffectsPharmacogenomics makes it easy for individuals to identify their respective gene code which in turn enables them to maintain a lifestyle that is in accordance with it so that the genetic complexities which might prove to be harmful in the future can be avoided. Moreover, disease vulnerability can be detected at an early age and the appropriate treatments and therapies can be offered at the right stage. Initially medicines were diagnosed considering the patient’s age and BMI; however, with the advent of Pharmacogenomics, the parameters for diagnosis have changed. Doctors now prescribe medicines keeping in view the genetics, body response to medicine etc which also decreases the chances of overdose. Harmful Effects Information related to pharmacogenomics can lead to a psychological disorder in some individuals since they find it depressing to know that they might be subjected to some genetic disorder in the future. Awareness of predisposition to diseases can lead to depressing state of some people. One of the social issues that have been observed due to pharmacogenomics is that it widens the gap between the rich and the poor since the information is available mostly to the rich people since they are more concerned about their health issues whereas poor people, on the other hand, are least bothered and are usually not aware of this technology due to which a discrimination line is automatically drawn between the two. Gaining the Respect of Others Essay Example For Students

Gaining the Respect of Others Essay My grandmother was a very respectable person who was raised in a good family with old fashioned values. Her childhood was spent on a farm in Wisconsin in the early 1900s and most of all she was a respectable person in the community and within her family. Just a brief description of my grandmother, she was not a very tall person at five foot four but her presence was much broader than she was tall. Respect is something that most people want and some people really dont care about it, all my life I have attempted to portray these characteristics in everything that I did to gain her respect. Gaining the respect of elders in this world is not easy because of the way my generation was raised. Respect for others has a lot to do with how you treat them. Do you deliberately ignore people of poor dress and hygiene? Are you kinder to a beautiful person? If you are one of these people then I feel sorry for you, even though those people that we stereotype as under privileged people may have Fortune 500 Executives who may have lost their jobs. You never know that could be us one day and then how would you feel about that? That is why my grandmother always taught me to respect and treat everyone as you would want to be treated by them. I would have to say that I had the greatest mentor for learning the process for giving and earning respect from others. You should be kind to peoples feelings and try and help people to feel happy, now that is part of showing respect. Many people do not get the proper respect that they want. Everyone thinks that respect for good looks and money make people very superficial and yet it is the standard that everyone follows in this generation. Showing respect for others is to try and go out of your way to treat everyone the same way. Respect is a seven letter word that requires you to give respect to others seven days a week and one day it may be returned back to you, as they say karma is the one thing that comes back to you good or bad. The way to show respect is to be kind to people and considerate to them as well. Growing up in the 1970s was very different, the majority of people in the world did not have a care in the world and it was known as the flower child era. The common phrases during this period were peace, love, dove and anything to do with flowers even though I grew up during this era I have instilled other beliefs. The one thing that I did to gain my grandmothers respect was when I picked up elderly lady groceries that a few children had knocked over while she was walking home on the sidewalk. The children never even stopped to see if she was alright, that disgusted me more than anything in the world at that time. After, the elderly lady was on her way again my grandmother looked at me and stated that she was proud of me because of what I had did for her. Even today
